Architectural and Building Consultancy Services
Delivered with clarity, experience and technical rigour.

About

I am an architect with over 25 years’ experience specialising in conservation, residential design, and façade consultancy. I grew up in a family of architects, working from an early age on the renovation of cottages, barns, and country houses, which gave me a strong grounding in traditional buildings.

I began my career as a cabinet maker, before moving into joinery and carpentry. I then studied building at Oxford Brookes University, followed by architecture and low carbon building design. Early in my architectural career, I worked with leading practices including Grimshaw, before going on to develop specialist expertise in façade design and technical detailing on major UK projects including HS1, HS2 and Battersea Power Station.

Alongside this, I have delivered numerous high-quality residential projects, particularly within listed buildings and conservation areas. My work combines a deep understanding of traditional construction—stone, lime, timber, and joinery—with modern building science and low-carbon design principles.

I take a hands-on, practical approach and work closely with clients, consultants, and contractors from concept through to completion, aiming to deliver carefully considered, well-crafted outcomes that respect both heritage and performance.

Approach

Design Workshop

In 2008, I introduced the Design Workshop as a more effective and accessible way to begin residential projects. Traditional design processes, with multiple meetings, repeated discussions and ongoing correspondence, can be slow and expensive.

In response, I developed a more direct and collaborative approach. In a single session, I work alongside the client using live 3D modelling in SketchUp to test ideas and explore options in real time. This immediate visual process allows decisions to be made quickly, clearly and with confidence.

Since then, the Design Workshop has become central to the way I work and is now used on the majority of projects. It consistently delivers efficient, well-resolved outcomes, and clients value both the speed of the process and the collaborative experience.

Consultancy

I now offer consultancy services to help clients make informed decisions at any stage of the design or construction process. Whether it’s expert advice on conservation, energy performance, building envelope design, or broader design guidance—covering new homes, extensions, alterations and improvements—I bring clarity and workable, buildable, and affordable solutions to each project. Even when it’s simply resolving a specific detail, I provide practical, considered solutions grounded in years of expertise.

My background is rooted in the Arts and Crafts tradition, with a strong understanding of vernacular architecture and the regional character of traditional buildings, which continues to inform my approach.
